When Louis Cartier designed the Tank in 1917 amidst the turbulence of World War I, his maison had already made significant strides in wristwatch design with three earlier models: the Santos-Dumont in 1904, the Tonneau in 1906, and the Tortue in 1912. While the Tank would go on to become one of Cartier’s most iconic creations, the Tortue has also earned its place in the hearts of collectors over the years. This elegant wristwatch features a manual mechanism housed in a 21 mm case, which, by contemporary standards, is modestly sized.
