The Vacheron Constantin ref. 4178, introduced in the early 1940s and produced for approximately 20 years, stands as a masterpiece in the brand’s chronograph history. Revered for its distinctive teardrop lugs and timeless elegance, the 4178 is widely considered one of the most beautiful chronograph watches ever crafted by Vacheron Constantin and by all brands. This particular model is powered by the renowned caliber 492, a manual-winding movement known for its precision and reliability. The reference 4178, designed to measure short periods of time, features scales such as the telemeter and tachymeter, adding to its functionality as a tool for tracking speed and distance. Two versions of chronograph buttons were produced: the oval-shaped ones and the rectangular variant (like the present watch), along with different bezel styles—either beveled or flat. This example, cased in yellow gold, retains its sharp lines and well-defined hallmarks, suggesting careful preservation. The gentle oxidation on the case further hints that the watch spent much of its recent life stored in safekeeping, untouched for long periods. The silvered dial, another highlight, includes a telemeter scale, applied Arabic and baton hour markers, and exudes a sense of vintage charm and meticulous craftsmanship that defines Vacheron Constantin’s commitment to detail. The watch has previously been sold by the famous Somlo London, located in the English capital from over 40 years and now in Burlington Arcade.
