Among the most complex wristwatches ever produced by Rolex, the present example belongs to the prestigious line of Dato-Compax chronographs, a collection that stands as a rare departure from the brand’s traditionally utilitarian designs. Introduced in 1947, the reference 4767 was Rolex’s first ever Dato-Compax model housed in an Oyster case, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s evolution. This pioneering piece laid the foundation for what would later become one of Rolex’s most sought-after complications: the “Jean-Claude Killy” series. Between 1947 and 1962, Rolex produced only four variations of the Oyster Dato-Compax: references 4767, 5036, 6036, and 6236. These models, available in yellow gold, pink gold, and stainless steel, remain among the rarest and most desirable Rolexes due to their low production numbers. Unlike the brand’s renowned tool watches such as the Submariner or GMT-Master, Rolex ventured into high complications only on select occasions, with vintage-era complications limited to the Killy line, the triple calendar moonphase models, and the elusive split-seconds reference 4113. This particular reference 4767, presented in stainless steel, is an exceptional and highly sought-after variant. Numbers suggest that only 400 pieces have been produced in total, of which 200 in steel with only approximately 30 examples known to date. The dial configuration is nothing short of spectacular, featuring a two-tone finish that subtly enhances the outer date scale, contrasting beautifully with the satin-finished central portion. The presence of tritium Arabic and dot numerals together with the hands are an extremely rare variant of dial configuration, creating an aesthetic that perfectly encapsulates the vintage charm of Rolex’s golden era of complicated watchmaking. Beyond its undeniable beauty, the rarity of this reference makes it a true collector’s piece and a rare opportunity to acquire a cornerstone of Rolex’s complicated history.
