Founded in 1791 and located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Girard-Perregaux is one of the oldest Fine Watchmaking manufacturers still in operation. Its history is dotted with exceptional creations mingling techniques and aesthetics, like the present lot. Initially launched in 2006 as a limited edition of 32 pieces, the “Challenger of Record” was made to commemorate the famed Golden Gate Yacht Club and their participation of the 32nd America’s Cup. The watch has a 44 mm titanium case with unidirectional rotating titanium bezel with a GMT function display. The black/carbon dial with luminous Arabic numerals, baton hour indexes and luminous hour hands are beautiful. Moreover the Sub-dial of small seconds is located at 7 o’clock position but most important is the integration of the flying tourbillon escapement into a diver’s watch with a 3000-meter depth rating. To achieve such a feat, a thick titanium case was implemented to withstand the pressures of the deep sea. Furthermore, two helium gas escape valves have been attached on both sides of the case band. The manual winding caliber with a power reserve approximately for 110 hours performs the following functions: hours, minutes, small seconds and tourbillon, a touch of modern technology and aesthetics.
