Launched in 1949, the reference 4591 embodies the voluptuous curves and futuristic shapes that defined post World War II design and exuberance. After a dark period for all the humanity, in all the fields have been embraced new lines that used materials that had previously been in short supply, usually linked with audacious designs. The rectangular case of the present lot has a bold clean design and is surely one of these creations, foreshadowing a mid-century design aesthetic. Affectionately known by collectors as “The Hour Glass”, this rectangular shell presents on the sides two central overhanging platinum decorative elements, four rounded lugs and a “bombé” crystal extremely well hand-crafted with small “folding” line from 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock. The case’s dynamism is tempered with a discreet dial, featuring a silver finish and a small seconds sub-dial but in order to add a pinch of preciousness have been chosen diamonds as indexes, keeping a superbly monochromatic result. Preserved in remarkable conditions, this watch is a lavish creation from Vacheron Constantin and for rectangular watch collectors is a totally unmistakable object for conditions, quality and rarity.
