Useful, elegant, and timeless, the Rolex Datejust has endured since 1945 in an impressive array of case materials, sizes, bezel configurations and dial types. A very attractive and classic combination of rich blue lapis lazuli, diamonds and yellow gold, the present watch is a rare example of reference 16 238 with a very captivating blue hard stone dial. Lapis lazuli is a deep blue semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its vibrant and rich color. Due to their fragile nature, many of these dials used to break during production which increases the manufacturing cost, so these watches are highly sought after by collectors. In fact, the manufacturing process consists of milling this stone to a thickness of less than 1 mm to create a dial, which, of course, must be free of any serious inclusions or natural flaws. It comes as no surprise that the number of pieces ever produced are not so elevated and during all these years many of these dials happened to break, making the lot here offered a very interesting opportunity for passionate. Preserved in remarkable condition with still the Rolex sticker on the case back and original warranty, this yellow-gold case shows deep hallmarks and fluted bezel. Furthermore, the dial is embellished with gold Arabic numerals at 6 and 9 o’clock with diamond centers.
