In 2000, Rolex introduced the reference 116 520 to replace the 16 520, marking a significant transition by incorporating the in-house caliber 4130 movement, which replaced the Zenith El Primero-based movement used in its predecessor. This change also involved a subtle repositioning of the subsidiary dials, further enhancing the model’s appeal among collectors. The 116 520 was launched with both black and white dial options and was met with instant success. Among the white dial variants of this reference, a small number have undergone a fascinating transformation over time, developing a cream-colored hue, exactly like the present lot. These “Cream Dial” Daytona models are highly sought after, as each dial is unique due to the random nature of the color change. Originally white, these dials have gradually shifted to a cream or mustard yellow color over the last two decades due to a natural defect in the protective varnish coating. Notably, only specimens produced between 2000 and 2002 with serial numbers in the P, K, and Y ranges have exhibited this distinctive change. The present example, bearing a Y serial number, has developed a beautiful tanned cream hue, setting it apart as a unique collectible. Accompanied by its original guarantee and receipt, this “beautiful mistake” by Rolex boasts a desirable characteristic that makes it a highly prized variant of the era.
