The here offered timepiece from the 1950s is a striking example of how watches of the era could defy conventions. At a time when smaller watches were the norm, this reference 8029, produced in 1951, is an exceptional rarity due to its unusually large 38 mm steel case, a notable deviation from the typical post-WWII luxury watch standards. Characterized by its elegant and distinctive concave lugs, the watch combines a classic steel case with modern proportions. The slim case has been meticulously preserved, showing serial numbers, maintaining its original dimensions and sharp edges, and is marked with a special engraving: “Empleados - K.L.M - Caracas 10.10.59.” This engraving hints at the watch’s connection to Venezuela and its prominent retailer, Serpico y Laino, a well-regarded name in the region during the 20th century. The silvered dial of this reference 8029, comes with a very unusual and rare configuration with sweep centre seconds and subsidiary seconds put in the same movement. Such contradictory mechanism is predominantly known to have been made by Omega in the end of 1940s for a small series of watches which were never commercialized. It can be assumed that the watch here was an attempt by Rolex, interestingly exactly at the same time, to gain experience with such experiments. The double-signature dial from Serpico y Laino adds a unique touch, enhancing the timepiece’s desirability among collectors. This watch stands as a testament to Rolex’s innovation and adherence to quality, making it a standout piece for any collector.
