Launched in 1968, Patek Philippe’s Golden Ellipse is a minimalist yet elegant watch that was ahead of its time. Its vibrant blue sunburst dial was audacious, giving this modern creation great character and depth. Among the many references manufactured of this model, the 3605, exactly like the present lot, was produced from 1971 until 1984, and houses the same automatic movement as the legendary Nautilus reference 3700 with calibre 28–255. The Golden Ellipse is known for its visually attractive balance, characterized by its rounded rectangular case designed using the famous “golden ratio.” This mathematical ratio has been used by artists since the Renaissance and can be found in the most beautiful architectural monuments and famous paintings. The reference 3605 was the largest Ellipse model ever made by Patek Philippe and certainly inspired the newly released reference 3738/100J. The present reference 3605/5, with its blue sunburst dial, diamond indexes and supple woven gold bracelet, is one of the most appealing among the Golden Ellipse. Manufactured in white gold and preserved in incredible condition, it is undoubtedly one of the best examples a collector could hope to find of this landmark model. Its generous dimensions match the standards for contemporary timepiece layouts, making it very relevant in today’s market. This particular example comes with a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, confirming the production of the watch with a blue dial, 11 applied white-gold indexes, and set with 48 diamonds weighing approximately 1.67 carats in 1974, with its subsequent sale on January 20, 1977.
