Among the groundbreaking designs of Vacheron in 1950’s and 1960’s, there were the Chronomètre Royale, known for its flared lugs, the distinctive “Cornes de Vache,” and the avant-garde “Cioccolatone.” The latter is particularly noteworthy for its oversized, rounded-square case, layered design, and sharply faceted dial indexes. The “Cioccolatone” began with the reference 4737 and was updated to the reference 6440 in 1957. It features the automatic caliber K1071, which was available both with and without a date function. The yellow-gold version of reference 6440, showcased here, is distinguished by its striking silver dial and is in an exceptionally well-preserved condition. Adding to its allure, this watch comes with its original box, warranty, and most notably, the purchase receipt in the name of Lieutenant Colonel Alfonso Gurza. Colonel Gurza was a prominent figure in the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force during World War II. His valor and service earned him notable distinctions, including the Service in the Far East decoration awarded by President Manuel Ávila Camacho of Mexico on November 21, 1945. Furthermore, Colonel Gurza was awarded the Legion of Merit in the Degree of Officer by the President of the United States, a prestigious accolade for his exceptionally meritorious conduct and outstanding service between January and November 1945. The Legion of Merit is one of the highest American honors for foreign military personnel, underscoring Colonel Gurza’s significant role and contributions during the conflict.
