From the 1970s, many watches were commissioned by royal personalities in the Arabic world, resulting in custom pieces often displaying the “Khanjar” logo or other insignias such as that of Saudi Arabia. While Rolex is best known for creating these custom pieces, other watchmakers like IWC, Baume & Mercier, and Chopard were also tasked by sovereigns to create watches bearing royal symbols. The example offered here is a special request made by Baume & Mercier for His Majesty Fahad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Son of Saud bin Abdulaziz, Fahad was King of Saudi Arabia from 1982 until 2005 and held several important ministerial roles before his reign. Among his passions were watches, and the one offered here is a very elegant creation by Baume & Mercier in yellow gold, featuring a “stick” bracelet and a square case, all still very nicely preserved. The blue stone dial creates a streaked effect with darker and lighter shades, giving it a very attractive look. At 3 and 9 o’clock are the special dedications with the name “Fahad” and the Saudi Arabian logo, both painted in white. This special piece exemplifies the luxury and personal significance of custom-commissioned watches in the royal courts of the Arabic world, making it a highly desirable item for collectors and enthusiasts.
