Launched in 1981 as the successor to the iconic reference 3448, Patek Philippe’s first automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch, the reference 3450 stands out as one of the most remarkable perpetual calendars ever created by the brand. With a production run lasting only about five years, this reference is exceptionally rare, with just around 237 examples ever made, crafted in either yellow or white gold. While it shares many physical similarities with its predecessor, the 3448, the 3450 introduced a key innovation: the inclusion of a leap year indicator on the dial, an advancement that set it apart in Patek Philippe’s perpetual calendar lineage. The case of the 3450 is slightly more compact than the 3448 and features a “tongue” on the case back, allowing for easy removal by the wearer. As production of the reference neared its end in 1985, a select few examples (fewer than two dozen) were produced with a sapphire crystal case back, designated as reference 3450-100, adding an extra layer of rarity to the model. The watch being offered here is a superbly preserved example of the reference 3450, which was discontinued over 37 years ago. This example, manufactured in 1985, exhibits the full elegance and presence that the 3450 offers, showcasing its substantial lugs and the sharp, clean lines that define its sophisticated design. The case still bears its legible hallmarks, a testament to the remarkable care and preservation this piece has enjoyed over the years. Adding to its exceptional condition, this watch comes with its original warranty, a fitted presentation box, and an additional date disc in German, further cementing its place as a coveted treasure for any serious collector. This rare timepiece encapsulates the culmination of Patek Philippe’s technical achievements in the realm of perpetual calendars and continues to hold its place as a masterpiece in the world of haute horlogerie.
