The Rolex Reference 6098, a coveted treasure among collectors, is the largest Bubbleback model ever produced without complications. Designed as a rugged sports watch, it was built to endure the harshest conditions. In fact, approximately 30 watches from this reference accompanied several Everest expeditions, earning it the nickname "pre-Explorer." Given its sporty nature, most 6098s feature standard dial layouts with applied dagger or Arabic indexes. However, in rare instances, a select few were equipped with light surface and stunning star-shaped indexes—more commonly associated with the celebrated Reference 6062. These rare pieces, often referred to as "Galaxy" models, are incredibly scarce in the market, making them highly sought after by collectors. Taking exclusivity a step further, some yellow-gold versions of this watch boast not only the distinctive star-shaped indexes but also an even more precious black gilt dial. Today, we are honored to offer one of these exceptionally rare specimens. This particular piece features a round automatic movement, housed in a beautifully preserved two-body yellow-gold case that retains its original proportions. What makes this timepiece truly remarkable is its exceptional "Stelline" style dial, showcasing a black gilt finish with striking star-shaped hour markers and dagger numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. According to our knowledge, fewer than five examples—most probably only three—have appeared at auction in recent years with this configuration, positioning this lot as one of the most desirable time-only references Rolex has ever produced. Additionally, this watch has been featured in John Goldberger's renowned book, 100 Superlative Rolex Watches.
