The story of aviation and horology converges remarkably with the creation of the Longines Hour Angle Watch, a pioneering tool that revolutionized aerial navigation. On May 21, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh’s historic transatlantic flight from New York to Paris captured the world’s imagination. As soon as Lindbergh set foot on French soil, he was already contemplating ways to enhance flight navigation. Recognizing the need for precise tools to improve long-distance air travel, Lindbergh reached out to John Heinmüller, then president of the International Aviation Federation and director of Longines-Wittnauer in America. By 1932, Lindbergh’s visionary ideas materialized into the Longines Hour Angle Watch, a groundbreaking instrument designed to assist pilots in accurately determining their longitude and position during flights. The present example of the Hour Angle Watch is a true marvel of both historical significance and preservation. Crafted in stainless steel and boasting a robust 47 mm diameter, this watch remains in exceptional condition even after 80 years. Its rotating bezel, with its distinct blue and black numerals, is easily legible. The enamel dial features clear hour indications, concentric 180-degree blue scale, and a revolving 60-minute disc, all remarkably clean and free of any significant wear. The original big crown at 3 o’clock retains its sharp fluted edges, a testament to its enduring craftsmanship. Hour Angle’s blend of historical importance, innovative design, and superb preservation makes it a must-have for any serious watch enthusiast or collector.
