Since its inception in watchmaking, Louis Cartier envisioned innovative designs that reflected the dawn of the 20th century. Following the square shape of the Santos-Dumont in 1904, Cartier introduced the Tonneau just two years later. The Cartier Tonneau, produced exclusively in precious metals, became a style statement for bold, trendsetting individuals eager to signal their modernity as the Belle Époque transitioned into the Art Deco era. Initially met with skepticism due to its distinctive elongated and curved shape, reminiscent of a barrel (tonneau in French), this design gradually gained widespread appreciation.
