The Patek Philippe reference 2497 stands as one of the most historically significant and revered timepieces ever created by the brand, produced from 1951 until its discontinuation in 1963. This model holds the distinction of being the world’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch with center seconds, a groundbreaking achievement that remained unmatched in Patek Philippe’s catalog for 30 years, until the introduction of reference 5050 in 1993. The rarity and desirability of the 2497 are underscored by the fact that only 179 examples were ever produced across both reference 2497 and its waterproof counterpart, reference 2438/1. The specific example presented here, bearing movement number 888 072, is a coveted treasure for discerning collectors. Reference 2497 can be divided into two distinct series, each identified by its case maker: the first series produced by Emile Vichet and the second by Wenger. The Wenger case, as seen in this example, is characterized by its domed case back and slightly shorter lugs, in contrast to the Vichet case, which features a flat case back and prominent, claw-shaped lugs that seamlessly complement the concave bezel. The presence of the key number “1” inside the case back confirms its Wenger lineage. The case, with its fluted lugs and defined curves, is beautifully preserved, with sharp edges and a deep, clear hallmark beneath the lug. A charming layer of oxidation on the case suggests that the watch has likely spent much of its recent life safely stored away, preserving its historical beauty. Reference 2497 is powered by the caliber 27SC (Seconde au Centre), a movement specially designed for perpetual calendar watches. Of the 180 movements made, movement number 888 000 was fitted into a prototype case, while the remaining 179 powered the 2497 and 2438/1 models. The dials of these watches can also be divided into two categories: one featuring applied Arabic numerals and dot indexes with feuille hands (as seen in this example), and the other with baton numerals and dauphine hands. The dial of this particular watch is a work of art in itself. The black enamel signature, outer seconds track, and blued steel seconds hand further enhance its beauty, while the solid gold feuille hour and minute hands add a touch of refined elegance. This formidable reference 2497 represents a true collector’s piece of exceptional quality and rarity. Its strong case proportions, finely defined lugs, and crisp hallmarks make it a standout in the world of vintage haute horlogerie. This extraordinary timepiece is accompanied by an extract from the archives, confirming its production in 1954 and subsequent sale on October 13, 1955 and and "deep-study" documentation by Mr. Tortella and sons.
