We are here in the presence of one of the rarest examples of Prince ever manufactured: the Rolex Prince reference 1960UF, also known as the “Super Prince Brancard”. Distinguished by its oversized and incredibly generous case, measuring an impressive 47 mm in length, this reference represents a bold departure from the more commonly seen reference 971 with the letters UF possibly stands for “Ultra Flared”. Its large proportions and distinctive aesthetics make it a standout among vintage Rolex watches. Crafted in a striking two-tone combination of 18 carats yellow and white gold, the present example is believed to be the first and possibly unique reference 1960UF in this particular configuration to ever appear at auction. In fact, less than a handful of these oversized Brancard models have ever surfaced the market, most commonly in “Rolesium”, further solidifying its status as a horological treasure. Historical records suggest that this model never progressed beyond the prototype stage, likely due to its unconventional size, making it an exceedingly rare find in the world of vintage Rolex collecting. The dial is a visual masterpiece, featuring an elegant two-tone sector design that separates the upper hours and minutes section from the prominent subsidiary seconds at six o’clock. This distinctive layout, with its clearly legible seconds display, earned the Rolex Prince the reputation as a “doctor’s watch,” widely favored by medical professionals for its precise timekeeping capabilities. Underneath the exquisite exterior lies Rolex’s coveted “Extra Prima” Observatory manual movement. The term “Extra Prima” was used to denote a very high standard of quality and precision, reserved for movements that underwent rigorous testing and met Rolex’s stringent chronometric standards. Such movements are highly sought after by collectors and reflect the brand’s early dedication to excellence in watchmaking. Incredibly well preserved, this example showcases a dial with beautiful Art Nouveau-style numerals, an oversized and elaborately designed case, and an overall condition that is truly remarkable. The combination of rarity, historical significance, and unique design elements makes this Rolex Prince reference 1960UF a true collector’s trophy. Whether as part of an important watch collection or for the dedicated Rolex connoisseur, this watch represents an unparalleled opportunity to own a piece of horological history.
