The legendary status of the Explorer was solidified when the Explorer became the first wristwatch worn on the summit of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, during their historic 1953 expedition. Launched in 1953, the Explorer was initially based on the robust Oyster “Bubbleback” case, which was designed to withstand the extreme conditions faced by mountaineers and explorers. However, it wasn’t until the success of Everest that Rolex officially launched the Explorer line, introducing the reference 6150 and 6350 with their signature 3-6-9 dial design. In 1955, Rolex released the reference 6610, a new-generation Explorer. This model featured an updated movement, the caliber 1030, allowing for a flatter case back compared to the earlier models. The result was a sleeker and more modern appearance. What truly sets the present reference 6610 apart, making it a rare and highly collectible piece, is the special red depth rating printed on the upper part of the dial, a feature that is rarely seen on this model. This distinctive detail, along with the black dial with gilt lettering, contributes to its appeal among collectors. The dial itself retains the characteristic 3-6-9 hour numerals that have become synonymous with the Explorer. The reference 6610, with its rare red depth rating and beautifully aged black gilt dial, remains one of the most coveted models in the Rolex Explorer family.
