Audemars Piguet timepieces from the mid-20th century are highly regarded by collectors as icons, celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship, striking design, and innovative technical features. The present mid-century Audemars Piguet is remarkable in its simplicity. Produced in the 1950s, it features an elegant 35 mm case, classic for the era. Its slim and refined yellow-gold case is adorned with elongated, downward-turned lugs and a waterproof screw-down caseback. Extremely well preserved, the timepiece is made alive thanks to the exceptionally refined Audemars Piguet movement, caliber 2499. Based on Jaeger-LeCoultre’s caliber 493, the self-winding cal. 2499 was in fact Audemars Piguet’s first self-winding movement. Research suggests that only 700 units were manufactured between 1953 and 1958. The minimal monochromatic dial is in excellent overall condition, showcasing some light oxidation to the applied hour indexes and is further signed by the famed Zürich-based retailer Türler. The case retains strong proportions and showcases a lovely oxidation to the caseband, bezel, and lugs. The present timepiece is unmistakably perfect for discerning connoisseurs of mid-century timepieces.
