Introduced in 1971, the Rolex Explorer II brought a bold new look to the iconic Explorer series with the reference 1655. Engineered for adventurers and professionals, this model stood out with its striking, oversized luminous orange 24-hour hand, earning it the nickname “Freccione,” Italian for “Big Arrow.” Designed with a 24-hour engraved bezel, the watch was specifically crafted to help speleologists distinguish between day and night during extended underground explorations. With a niche market for such specialized watches, the reference 1655 saw limited sales, making it especially rare compared to other Rolex sports models. The present Rolex reference 1655 is an extremely fine specimen. Preserved in excellent overall condition with strong proportions and a solid case, it further showcases a charming lightly aged dial that is starting to acquire a creamy hue to its hour indexes. Displaying a “Mk 4” dial, correct for its serial number, the watch is further paired with a correct Oyster bracelet. In the world of “tool” watches, the Explorer II “Freccione” stands tall as an emblem of adventure and exclusivity. Embrace the journey into the extraordinary with a watch that transcends its utilitarian roots, emerging as a true masterpiece, a legacy of exploration, elegance, and enduring style.
