The perpetual calendar chronograph with moonphase is Patek Philippe’s longest-running collection and a fundamental part of the brand’s production. All models in this series have been highly collectible, with some regarded as the pinnacle of Patek Philippe craftsmanship. Introduced in 1994 and produced for about eight years, the Patek Philippe reference 5020, nicknamed the “TV Screen” because of its distinctive cushion shape, served as an alternative to the reference 3970 and even more notably was the very first perpetual calendar chronograph from Patek Philippe to not have a round case. It shared the same set of complications: perpetual calendar with leap year, a 24-hour indicator, moonphase, and chronograph. Inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1920s, the reference 5020 didn’t garner much attention when it was first released. However, it has since become highly coveted by collectors for its distinctive case design. In production from 1994 to 2002, it is believed that around 750 examples were crafted in total, with only around 250 having come to market. Produced in far fewer numbers than its older brother reference 3970, the reference 5020 was cased in pink, like the present example, yellow, or white gold as well as in platinum. With its bold cushion-shaped, TV-style silhouette measuring 37 mm × 45 mm, this case commands presence on the wrist. Crafted by the esteemed Atelier Réunis—renowned for shaping some of Patek Philippe’s most iconic designs—it delivers a striking, architectural elegance. Compared to the more traditional proportions of the 3970, this cushion-shaped case offers a far more expansive and commanding aesthetic. The present example of Patek Philippe reference 5020 from 2001 is preserved in excellent overall condition, with deep and visible hallmarks, and an extraordinary Breguet dial. Its retro-inspired design, large size, and exceptional rarity set it apart from all other Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph models.
