The Patek Philippe reference 2554, affectionately nicknamed “Manta Ray”, this name pays homage to the design’s flowing form and was designed whilst Gilbert Albert was at the helm of the design department, . The curves of the case, the refined lines, and the overall dynamic shape embody a sense of sophisticated movement that captures the essence of Patek Philippe’s design ethos. The rarest variation of this model is found in platinum, with only a handful examples of this configuration and special details known to exist. The watch’s rarity is indeed further enhanced by the luxurious addition of 22 tapered baguette diamonds set into the flared sides of the case. This diamond setting is highly unusual for Patek Philippe and showcases the brand’s masterful craftsmanship. The rectangular satin-silvered dial with applied baton markers is complemented by a curved crystal, which accentuates the fluidity of the design. The platinum case itself is in excellent condition, maintaining a crisp hallmark at the 6 o’clock position. This reference 2554 serves as the precursor to the modern Patek Philippe 5100, better known as the “10-day,” and its design directly influenced the development of that iconic model. Cased in a total of 400 examples, only 50 where cased in platinum of which only less than 10 are known to the market. The grace and incredible rarity of the present watch, combined with its remarkable condition and limited availability, make this a must-have for collectors. With its elegant curves and artistic craftsmanship, the Manta Ray is truly a masterpiece from Patek Philippe’s legendary history.
