The present Patek Philippe reference 7891, part of the Ricochet collection, is a personal endeavor by renowned jewelry and watch designer Gilbert Albert. In 1955, at just 25 years old, Gilbert Albert was appointed workshop director at Patek Philippe. Over his eight-year tenure, he redefined the brand’s mid-century aesthetic, drawing inspiration from nature for his Ricochet collection and introducing bold, futuristic designs. Produced in extremely limited numbers from 1960 to 1961, these watches, as exemplified by the present example, showcased a unique blend of horological mastery and creative expression. The boldly textured case, crafted in yellow gold, exudes a unique architectural presence with its hammered finish, creating a play of light and shadow. The Roman numerals, radiating across the bezel, are a striking feature that blends classic watchmaking tradition with a modernist flair. Together with the minimalist central dial, this watch maintains an overall sense of understated sophistication. A true work of wearable art, this watch is not merely an accessory but a statement of refined taste and individuality. Most notably, the present timepiece, initially born as a Ricochet pocket watch, was later customized by a highly trusted jeweler at the request of the original owner to become a wristwatch via the application of two extremely fine and elegantly placed U-shaped welded lugs. Rarely seen and highly collectible, it represents the pinnacle of mid-century design and the exceptional craftsmanship synonymous with Patek Philippe.
