A cornerstone in Rolex’s chronograph lineage, the reference 6238 holds a pivotal place in the brand’s history as the direct predecessor to the Daytona. Produced in stainless steel, 14k, and 18k yellow gold, this model was offered with a variety of dial configurations, including silver, grey, and black versions. Unlike its successor, the reference 6239, which introduced the external tachymeter scale on the bezel, the 6238 retained a more understated and elegant aesthetic, with tachymeter and/or telemeter scales printed directly on the dial. Dated to approximately 1965, this particular example is an outstanding and incredibly well-preserved piece is distinguished by its exceptionally rare “galvanic” black dial. The luminous hour markers have gracefully aged to a warm light brown patina, perfectly complementing the hands and enhancing the vintage appeal of the watch. The stepped case-to-bezel transition is nicely pronounced and demonstrate a great preservation of the whole watch. Powering this timepiece is the manual-winding caliber 722, a movement known for its reliability and precision. The presence of the “ROW” stamp on the bridge confirms that this watch was originally destined for the North American market, further adding to its desirability. With its stunning black dial, great case, and historical significance, this reference 6238 is a true collector’s treasure, embodying the bridge between Rolex’s early chronographs and the iconic Daytona era that followed.
