Launched in 1940, the Patek Philippe reference 1491 exemplifies the brand’s commitment to pioneering design and avant-garde innovation. At first glance, the reference 1491 may appear understated, but its true originality becomes evident when viewed from the side. The watch features unusual lugs, often referred to as “Riccio” (meaning “lock” in Italian) due to their resemblance to a curly lock of hair. This distinctive lug design marks a significant departure from traditional watch aesthetics and foreshadows the more radical shapes and styles that emerged in the 1960s. Produced in two versions, the first series of reference 1491 housed the calibre 12–120 and featured small seconds. The second series, introduced in 1949, was equipped with the calibre 27SC, known for its center sweep seconds exactly like the present watch. Despite these variations, both series retained the distinctive lugs that have become a hallmark of this model. The reference 1491 is also affectionately nicknamed “Fernandel” by French collectors, named after the famous comedian who was known to wear this watch with pride. The present example, manufactured in pink gold, is a fine representation of Patek Philippe’s avant-garde approach. It is well-preserved, with its distinctive scroll lugs and overall case in excellent condition. The silvered dial, with its center seconds and applied baton hour markers, further enhances the watch’s appeal with its elegant simplicity. This timepiece is a cherished piece of horological history, celebrated for its unique design and enduring allure.
