The reference 8171 stands as a timeless piece that has captivated the hearts of collectors and watch enthusiasts for decades. Rolex produced only two wristwatch models featuring the alluring moon phase complication: the 6062 and, as highlighted here, the 8171. The primary distinction between these two models lies in their cases—the 8171 features a snap-on back, while the 6062 is equipped with a screw-back case, enhancing its water resistance. Despite this, the 8171, affectionately dubbed “Padellone” by Italian collectors due to its unusually large diameter for the time, remains highly wearable even today when larger case sizes are favored. Produced in a very limited series between 1949 and 1952 and a last batch in the ’60s, the reference 8171 mostly appeared in yellow gold or steel, with rarer versions in pink gold. This particular watch is one of the rarest iterations, featuring an 18k pink gold case in remarkable overall condition. The lugs are thick and full, with a pronounced step between the lugs and the case, a feature only seen in the best-preserved examples. The argentè two-tone dial, supplied by Stern, is exquisitely beautiful with a slight patina that fades gently. The outer perimeter features the dates of the triple calendar, indicated by an arrow and displayed in a blue that matches the blue of the moon phase at 6 o’clock. The indexes and dauphine hands in pink gold shine brightly under the light, enhancing its allure. Vintage yet strikingly contemporary, the Padellone is one of those select watches that a true collector must possess to truly define their collection.
