The Rolex Turn-O-Graph, launched at Baselworld in 1953, is widely regarded as the “father” of the Submariner, laying the groundwork for many design elements that would define Rolex’s iconic dive watches. Reference 6202, the inaugural model of the Turn-O-Graph, represents a revolutionary moment in horology, blending sportiness and functionality with elegance. Its defining feature was the black rotating bezel, marked with graduations for timing events, a groundbreaking concept that transformed the wristwatch into a versatile tool for sports and professional activities. This bezel design would later become a hallmark of models such as the GMT-Master, Submariner, and Explorer. The 6202 also features the “Rolex Oyster-Perpetual” signature in gilt, a continuous track for seconds and minutes, and a combination of baton, dot, and triangular hour markers. Its clean, utilitarian design was complemented by a small crown with no crown guards. What sets this reference apart, however, is the subtle yet distinctive “honeycomb” dial configuration—a rare and sought-after detail, creating a stunning patina. Its dial displays a uniform patina that enhances the honeycomb texture, while the radium hour markers and hands maintain a beautiful tone. Introduced before the Submariner and GMT-Master, the Turn-O-Graph reference 6202 holds an important place in Rolex’s history as the first model to incorporate a rotating bezel, and for collectors this piece is not only a testament to Rolex’s pioneering spirit but also a highly desirable and rare artifact from the early days of sports watches.
