The Royal Oak is not only famous for its now unmistakable case design, but also for what it represents for horology’s history. First released in 1972, the original Ref. 5402 was a bold stainless steel watch designed by Gerald Genta and was designed as a luxury sports watch and the scandalous part was that it was priced accordingly- the same as an equivalent gold watch of its era. Later on, this model gained that popularity and desire that today makes tone of the most appreciated by collectors. That the reason that led Audemars to create many versions of this specimen, one of them was realized in 2003, the the Maison opened its flagship store in New York to commemorate its launching. It was the here offered La Boutique Royal Oak”, produced as a limited edition of 150 pieces. Powered by the caliber 2226, the three-body PVD-coated case with octagonal bezel, screw-down steel and rubber winding crown and pump pushers is still very gorgeous, that demonstrated by the deep engravings on the back featuring the façade of the boutique and La Boutique 40E, 57th. The dial recalls the black of the whole watch, with checker board decoration and luminous radial Arabic numerals, subsidiary dials for the seconds, the 12-hour and 30-minute registers, aperture for the date between 4 & 5 and luminous white baton hands. This limited edition watch comes with its original box and papers.
